Can I join FLUENT if I do not attend Saratoga High School?
Absolutely! FLUENT membershp is open to any student. You can follow FLUENT's translation procedure remotely by submitting a sign up form to get started and referencing our Beginner Guide for Members. If you do not wish to translate, you can sign up for biweekly mailers from FLUENT, which will include slideshows from our in-person club meetings. These slideshows will cover club updates and a topic concerning linguistics, translation techniques, or the translation industry.
Are members required to translate?
No, FLUENT members are not required to translate. Although translation services are FLUENT's focus, FLUENT also promotes language-learning and education on the translation industry, from teaching translation techniques to researching famous translators. Our in-person club meetings at Saratoga High School involve our members in pre-professional translation learning and activities, which are both recreational and educational, such as playing quiz games, watching TED Talks, and analyzing language interpreters in action.
What is the language proficiency required for translators?
FLUENT provides countless translation tasks, which range greatly in their content, length, and language difficulty. Thus, the expected language proficiency is very flexible and ultimately depends on the translation task that a translator wants to commit to. While FLUENT has translators with native or very advanced proficiency in a second language, we also have beginner language-learners who are just starting to explore translating. Whether a translator's translation task is for their own recreation's sake, their own education's sake, or for their community's sake, anyone is welcome to join FLUENT and embark on a journey to become a strong, confident translator. "How to Be a Member/Translator" in our Beginner Guide for Members document has more information.
